Late at night, Sasha Tycko and I planted flowers taken from the university campus in four of the deepest potholes on the streets of Hyde Park. I returned in the early morning to document the remains.

Prior to the act, I took flowers and soil by their roots from the flower beds in front of Levi Hall, the main administrative building at the University of Chicago—notorious for protests that led to the arrest of students and banishment of community members from campus boundaries.

This act responds to the physical experience of the neighbourhood and to the tense community relations along the dominating geography of the university campus. The gesture speaks to a particular proximity to place that alone allows imagination to fill in its potholes.
